Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Add granulated sugar and corn syrup. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  4. Bring mixture to a boil, then stir in sweetened condensed milk.
  5. Continue to boil, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 245 degrees F (118 degrees C) on a candy thermometer, or forms a firm ball when dropped into cold water. This will take about 15-20 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt. If using, stir in chopped nuts.
  7. Pour mixture into the prepared baking pan.
  8. Let cool completely, then cut into bite-sized pieces.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • For a smoother caramel, stir more frequently during the boiling process.
