Ingredients
Scale
1 cup butter
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup corn syrup
1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
Add granulated sugar and corn syrup. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
Bring mixture to a boil, then stir in sweetened condensed milk.
Continue to boil, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 245 degrees F (118 degrees C) on a candy thermometer, or forms a firm ball when dropped into cold water. This will take about 15-20 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt. If using, stir in chopped nuts.
Pour mixture into the prepared baking pan.
Let cool completely, then cut into bite-sized pieces.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
For a smoother caramel, stir more frequently during the boiling process.
