Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 pound spaghetti
Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Instructions
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off excess fat.
Add chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and water. Add basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For a richer flavor, simmer for 1-2 hours.
While the sauce simmers, cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain well.
Serve the meat sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
Notes
For a leaner sauce, use ground turkey or a mixture of ground beef and pork.
Add a pinch of sugar to the sauce if it tastes too acidic.
You can add other vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms to the sauce.
