Mac and Cheese with Creamy Velvety Sauce

A classic comfort food recipe for macaroni and cheese with a rich, smooth, and creamy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 0.5 pound Elbow macaroni
  • 0.25 cup Butter
  • 0.25 cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, Shredded
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
  5. Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra richness, you can add a splash of heavy cream to the sauce.
  • Whole milk is recommended for the creamiest sauce.
